Museum of Totalitarianism

The proposal converts the former prison complex in central Uherské Hradiště into a group of cultural, judicial and administrative institutions. The Museum of Totalitarianism occupies the principal part, while side wings house the district court, public prosecution offices and the probation and mediation service. Each function has a separate entrance and can operate on its own schedule.

Later additions are removed from the historic neo-classical complex, and new volumes complete its symmetrical composition. The perimeter wall changes according to the character of each space: it opens around the garden, offers angled views at the museum entrance and remains closed beside the former isolation cells. These degrees of enclosure distinguish everyday public use, cultural activity and areas of commemoration connected to the prison’s history.

The grounds include an entrance square for events, a café in former garages, a sculpture park developed with the local art school, a staff garden and a memorial courtyard on the former execution site. New passages connect the previously closed block to surrounding streets and anticipate future redevelopment of the adjacent bus station.
